Our Story

Kim Henderson

Setting the Captives Free Inc. and “Because We Care Las Vegas” is a beacon of hope nestled in the heart of Southern Nevada. Their mission? Simple yet profound: to end homelessness, one person at a time. Led by the indomitable Evangelist Kim Henderson, this tax-exempt organization works tirelessly to empower people, freeing them from addictions and homelessness. Kim’s vision extended beyond mere survival; she sought to instill a healthy self-image in those she served, reminding them that they were created for greatness.

The statistics are staggering: homelessness had surged, with a 16% increase in Southern Nevada alone—the largest in a decade. Over 6,500 people were counted as homeless in January 2023, and an estimated 16,251 were expected to experience homelessness in Clark County throughout the year. The causes were multifaceted: lack of affordable housing, unemployment, poverty, and low wages. Families and single individuals alike faced this harsh reality.

Because we care las vegasBut our walls hope flickered like a candle in the night. They embodied the words of Matthew 25:34–40, feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, and caring for the sick. Her programs such as the Nightrider and Monday Night Programs aim to serve our homeless community by providing warm meals, compassion, and hope during the darkest hours. became a refuge, their compassion a lifeline. And Evangelist Kim Henderson stood at the forefront, a tireless advocate for those society had forgotten.

On this Monday night, as the sun dipped below the desert horizon, casting shadows on the streets, Kim Henderson’s voice echoed through the Historic Westside corridors. She and her team shared stories of redemption, of lives transformed, and of the inherent worth of every soul. Her unwavering faith fueled her mission, and she believed that even the least among them deserved dignity and love.

And so, in the heart of the desert, where the neon lights of Las Vegas glimmered in the distance “Because We Care Las Vegas” continued its quiet revolution. Kim Henderson’s legacy was etched not in marble or gold but in the lives she touched—the addicts who found sobriety, the families reunited, and the homeless who discovered their purpose.

Kim Henderson and her team have evolved beyond merely setting up a table and handing out food, or driving all around the historic Westside; they have become a beacon of hope, a bridge connecting those who care with those in need. First-time volunteers can glimpse the faces of those they help, witness transformed lives, and join the fight against homelessness. Today, we quietly promise compassion, resilience, and the audacity to believe that change is possible.

And so, the story continues to unfold—a tale of compassion, resilience, and the relentless pursuit of a world where no one feels hungry. In the desert’s embrace, hope blooms, and the captives find freedom, one person at a time.

The State of Homelessness

People in line waiting to be fed

HOMELESSNESS IS REAL

Last year’s count showed rates of homelessness throughout the state increased from the previous year.  Southern Nevada alone had a 16% increase in homelessness from its previous year –  in fact, the largest count in a decade.

There were 6,566 people counted in January 2023. An estimated 16,251 were expected to experience homelessness in Clark County at some point in the year.

Overall, 66.7% of the total homeless population of the United States is single individuals, with the remaining 33.3% being families. In recent years, homelessness increased nationally by almost one percent. This number comprises unaccompanied children and young adults, single adults experiencing chronic homelessness, and people experiencing unsheltered homelessness. Some populations have seen a decrease in homelessness. Dramatic reductions are amongst families and the veteran community.

Homeless Population by State 2022

In the United States, there are over half a million people experiencing homelessness. These individuals live in a temporary shelter or transitional housing or sleep in a place not meant for habitation (like an abandoned building). The top four causes of homelessness, in order, are lack of affordable housingunemploymentpoverty,  and low wages.
